May 03, (THEWILL) – Former world number one, Andy Murray, secured his first win in over a month with a straight-sets victory over Gael Monfils, at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger event.
Murray, who had been experiencing a challenging period in his career, suffered early exits in his previous three tournaments. However, his recent triumph against Monfils could be the tonic he needs as he prepares for the French Open, where he has expressed his intention to play.
Monfils, who had missed the second half of 2022 and the start of 2023 with heel and foot injuries, has also had a difficult start to the season. The Frenchman, who is now ranked number 322 in the world, has not won a match on the ATP Tour in 2023.
Murray, on the other hand, appeared rejuvenated at the Australian Open, but his form has since deserted him, making his latest win all the more significant. In their match on Wednesday, Murray controlled the outcome from the outset and dominated Monfils to win in 1 hour and 18 minutes.
He won the first set in 43 minutes, breaking Monfils twice and getting broken once, before securing two further breaks in the second set to seal the win. Murray will now face Frenchman Laurent Lokoli in the Last-16 of the tournament.
