May 03, (THEWILL) – British number one, Emma Raducanu, is set to miss Grand Slams at Roland Garros and Wimbledon after deciding to undergo a “minor procedure” on both hands and her ankle.
The injuries, which she had been managing for the last few months, have stunted her game recently and were responsible for her withdrawal from the Madrid Open last week shortly before her opening match. The 20-year-old took to social media to reveal that she will be “out for the next few months” and will miss “the summer events”.
Raducanu’s injury setback comes at a time when she was hoping to build on her breakthrough 2021 season. THEWILL recalls that as a teenager, she made history when she became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title at the US Open. She followed that up with a run to the fourth round of Wimbledon.
However, Raducanu’s form has dipped since then and she has struggled with injuries and fitness issues. The last time she won a match on the WTA Tour was at Indian Wells in October 2022. She is set to drop out of the top 100 in the WTA rankings especially after her early withdrawal from the Madrid Open.
The surgery is a definite setback for Raducanu’s hopes of becoming a top-ranked player, but she is still young and has plenty of time to recover. She will be hoping to return to action in time for the US Open later this year.
