December 18, (THEWILL) — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Wednesday that the Academy Awards (Oscars) will stream exclusively on YouTube starting in 2029, marking a major shift away from traditional television.
The new multi-year partnership gives YouTube exclusive global streaming rights to the Oscars and related Academy programming from 2029 to 2033.
“The Academy is an international organisation, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible, which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community”, Academy CEO, Bill Kramer, and Academy President, Lynette Howell Taylor, said in a statement.
Under the deal, YouTube will stream the Oscars live and free worldwide, reaching more than 2 billion users.
Coverage will include the main awards ceremony, red-carpet events, behind-the-scenes content, and other Academy programs such as the Governors Awards and the Oscar nominations announcement.
The Oscars have aired on US network television for decades, with ABC broadcasting the ceremony almost continuously since the 1960s.
ABC’s current contract runs through the 100th Academy Awards in 2028, after which YouTube will become the exclusive platform.
Academy leaders said the move reflects changing viewing habits and a growing demand for online access. They noted that YouTube’s global reach will help the Oscars connect with a wider audience.
Television ratings for the Oscars have declined in recent years as more viewers turn to digital platforms.
Streaming on YouTube will allow audiences worldwide to watch on mobile phones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs, without the need for cable or network television.
The decision marks a major turning point for the Oscars, as the ceremony transitions from traditional broadcast television to a leading streaming platform.
