June 25, (THEWILL) – Oyo and Delta States have emerged as victors in the men and women divisions of the 2023 BetKing 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball National Championship.

The tournament took place at the outdoor sports hall of the Alake Sports Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun state. In a thrilling match, Oyo State defeated Lagos State 10-1 to claim the title in the men’s category. In the women’s division, Delta State emerged victorious by defeating Oyo State 3-2.

The competition witnessed some intense battles for the third position. In the men’s category, Osun state staged an impressive comeback, overcoming a three-point deficit to defeat Abuja 7-5 and secure the third position. In the women’s category, Imo state dominated their match against Kwara state, triumphing with a score of 5-1 to secure the third position.

The President of Wheelchair Basketball Federation of Nigeria, Seyi Johnson, commented on the competition, stating: “The competition gave the competitors a chance to vie for the opportunity to represent Nigeria in the African Para Games in Ghana in September.” He further highlighted the board’s relentless efforts to restore Nigeria’s prominence in African wheelchair basketball.

The winners in both categories were rewarded for their outstanding performances. They received a trophy and a cash prize of N500,000. The first runners-up received N300,000, while the second runners-up were awarded N200,000. The championship not only exposed the exceptional skills and determination of the wheelchair basketball players but also provided them with an avenue to compete for national representation on an international stage.
