July 09, (THEWILL) – The Paraguayan Football Association (APF) has dismissed Daniel Garnero from his position as head coach of the national team. This decision comes after Paraguay’s disappointing showing in the recent Copa America tournament.
Garnero, who took charge in September 2023, led the team through a challenging Copa America campaign. Paraguay suffered defeats in all three of their matches, losing 2-1 to Colombia, 4-1 to Brazil, and 2-1 to Costa Rica. These results led to their elimination in the first round of the competition.
The 55-year-old Argentine coach’s tenure also saw Paraguay struggle in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The team currently sits in seventh place out of ten teams, having earned only five points from six matches played.
The APF announced the termination of Garnero’s contract on Monday, via a statement on social media. The federation stated: “The APF announces the termination of the relationship with DT Daniel Garnero as head coach of the Paraguayan national team.”
Garnero had replaced fellow Argentine Guillermo Barros Schelotto when he took over the role last year. The APF has not yet announced who will succeed Garnero as the new head coach of the Paraguayan national team.
