April 17, (THEWILL) — Paramount Pictures has confirmed that “Top Gun 3” is officially in development.
The announcement was made during the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 16, 2026.
The new film will see Tom Cruise return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, with producer Jerry Bruckheimer also set to return to the franchise.
According to Paramount, the screenplay is currently in progress, with writer Ehren Kruger leading the project.
Kruger, who also co-wrote “Top Gun: Maverick,” has been developing the new installment alongside filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, who is also expected to be involved.
The film continues the story of the original “Top Gun” (1986) and its 2022 sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” both of which were major box-office successes for the studio.
Cruise did not appear on stage at the event but was featured in a recorded video message, filmed from atop a studio water tower, in which he said, “The future looks pretty great from here.”
Details such as the release date and director have not yet been confirmed.
