March 28, (THEWILL) – The US men’s national soccer team booked a spot in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals with a hard-fought 1-0 win over a well-organised El Salvador side.
The match was a grind in the first half as US struggled to break down the opposition defence. The second half saw an injection of energy and a moment of magic, as Ricardo Pepi scored the game-winning goal just two minutes after coming off the bench.
Pepi’s goal was a result of a beautiful through ball from Weston McKennie that allowed the striker to race onto the delivery and beat his defender with pace before finishing with a delightful chip. In defense, Miles Robinson was exceptional on his return to the national team after suffering an Achilles injury. He put in multiple blocks, tackles, and interceptions to keep El Salvador’s counter-attacks at bay throughout the game.
The USMNT is now set to face off against arch-rivals Mexico in the semi-finals of the Nations League this summer, unless certain results go against them.
