June 01, (THEWILL) – Oscar Piastri led from pole to claim victory at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, claiming McLaren’s third one-two finish of the Formula 1 season at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Australian driver maintained a commanding lead throughout the 66-lap race, finishing 2.471 seconds ahead of teammate Lando Norris.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took third place, capitalising on a late-race penalty to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. Piastri’s fifth win of the season extended his lead in the drivers’ championship to 10 points over Norris, solidifying McLaren’s dominance in the 2025 campaign.
The race saw intense competition, particularly from Verstappen, who employed an aggressive three-stop strategy to challenge the McLaren duo. Despite closing the gap to within a few seconds of Norris after the final pit stops, Verstappen’s race unravelled following a collision with Mercedes’ George Russell. The incident occurred during a late safety car period triggered by Kimi Antonelli’s engine failure and resulted in a 10-second penalty, dropping Verstappen from fifth to 10th place.
Russell finished fourth, while Nico Hulkenberg’s late pass on Lewis Hamilton earned Kick Sauber fifth. Piastri’s performance was marked by precision and composure, as he navigated the challenging Barcelona circuit under swelteringly dry conditions. Starting from pole after a dominant qualifying session, he fended off early pressure from Verstappen, who briefly overtook Norris for second at Turn 1.
McLaren’s strategic tyre management proved decisive, allowing Piastri to maintain his lead even as Norris closed to within three seconds by lap 37. The McLaren one-two finish showed the team’s technical superiority, unaffected by recent FIA regulations targeting front-wing flexibility.
Red Bull and Ferrari had hoped the rule change would narrow McLaren’s advantage, but Piastri’s 0.2-second qualifying margin over Norris, the largest of the season, proved otherwise. With nine races completed, McLaren’s seventh victory in 2025 signals a potential shift in Formula 1’s competitive landscape.
