July 21, (THEWILL) – Poland’s veteran midfielder, Jakub Blaszczykowski, renowned for his impressive 109 international games and 29 goals for the country, has officially declared his retirement from professional football.
The 37-year-old player made this emotional announcement on his Facebook page late Thursday, posting: “Every road has its end… I made the difficult decision to end my career. Thank you for the huge support I received every step of the way,”
Blaszczykowski’s football journey began at Wisla Krakow, where his exceptional talent was initially on display before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2007. Remaining with the German club for a decade, he became an instrumental figure with 28 goals in 235 Bundesliga games. A brief one-year loan to Italian side Fiorentina was followed by a move to Wolfsburg in 2016, where he played for three seasons before returning to Wisla, the club he helped save from bankruptcy by investing in a quarter of its shares in 2019.
Although he faced injury setbacks, Blaszczykowski’s dedication to the sport and his national team remained unwavering. He proudly represented Poland in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and stood as a testament to their footballing talents. However, he was not selected for the 2022 edition in Qatar, marking the end of his international journey.
As he prepares for his final game with Wisla on August 5, the footballing world will not forget his significant contributions for Poland and the legacy he left in the clubs he played for.
