July 21, (THEWILL) – In a hard-fought Group B clash at the Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s Super Falcons managed to hold reigning Olympic champions Canada to a goalless draw on Friday.
The Nigerian side faced an uphill battle as Canada dominated possession and even earned a penalty opportunity, but goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie’s crucial save from Christine Sinclair’s spot-kick provided the much-needed impetus. American coach Randy Waldrum commended Nnadozie’s performance, stating that her save ignited the team’s spirit and instilled the belief that they could secure at least a point against the formidable Canadian opponents.
“Chiamaka’s save really kind of lit the fire and made us realise there’s still something to play for, and that the mountain wasn’t too hard to climb,” said Waldrum, expressing his appreciation for the young goalkeeper’s heroic contribution.
“We have to try to improve our performance but overall I’m pleased with the way the team played and the way we thought we had to play to get a result. I’m pleased and they did perform well in that regard,” Waldrum added, acknowledging the team’s collective effort in facing a strong Canadian side.
Looking ahead to the upcoming match against co-hosts Australia, the Nigerian coach warned against complacency despite the absence of Australia’s star striker, Sam Kerr, due to a calf injury. “It happens in football, unfortunately. It’s part of the game, but they’re still a really good side,” he said, cautioning his players not to underestimate the hosts.
“I watched their performance against Ireland (a 1-0 win); they’re dangerous with so many different weapons. We can’t go into it thinking the game is already won because they don’t have a star player. Our players understand that,” Waldrum emphasised, urging his team to maintain focus and determination in their quest for progression to the knockout stages.
