May 25 (THEWILL) — Pope Leo XIV has warned about the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, saying the technology must not be controlled by “a few” powerful people or companies.
In his first major theological document, Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”), made public on Monday, May 25, the pope called for stricter ethical rules on artificial intelligence and its use in society.
He warned that AI could increase inequality, spread misinformation, and worsen global conflicts if left without proper regulation.
The pope also criticized the use of AI in warfare, saying military technology should be subject to “the most rigorous ethical constraints.”
“The construction of a world in a state of perpetual conflict is an evil and must be named for what it is,” he wrote.
Pope Leo said humanity must protect “the dignity of the human person” as technology continues to advance rapidly. He added that AI should serve people rather than replace human judgment and values.
Using the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, the pope warned against concentrating too much digital power in the hands of a few groups or corporations.
He also called for stronger laws, international cooperation, and protections for workers affected by automation.
The document also addressed wider global issues, including war, migration, and social justice. Pope Leo said the church’s traditional “just war” doctrine is now outdated and argued that military force should only be used in strict self-defense.
The Vatican released the document alongside Christopher Olah, co-founder of AI company Anthropic, as part of efforts to include tech leaders in the discussion on the future of artificial intelligence.
Pope Leo has made artificial intelligence a key focus of his papacy and has set up a Vatican commission to study its impact on society.
