September 25, (THEWILL) – Belgian side KAA Gent have confirmed that Nigerian striker, Gift Orban, has been handed a two-match ban by the country’s Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, following his red card against KAS Eupen on Sunday.
THEWILL recalls that Orban was sent off by referee Jan Boterberg in the 44th minute after pushing Eupen defender, Rune Paeshuyse. Gent lodged an appeal but the adjudicating body ruled that the offence involved violent conduct and a forceful push warranting a suspension.
However, as it was Orban’s first career red card after 57 matches, the body decided he would only serve a one-match ban while the other was suspended. This means the 20-year-old will miss Gent’s upcoming league clash against champions Antwerp but can return against RWD Molenbeek on October 1.
The ban caps a difficult period for Orban, who has struggled with form and fitness recently, missing Nigeria’s match during the international break and failing to score in his last five games for Gent. Despite this, he has still netted an impressive 6 goals in 11 appearances across all competitions this season.
