March 19, (THEWILL) – Aaron Ramsdale will miss Arsenal’s encounter against Aston Villa on Saturday due to injury, and he is now a major question for England’s upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper suffered a hip injury in the first half of Arsenal’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday.
Although Ramsdale laboured to finish the 90 minutes at the Emirates Stadium, his injury will prevent him from starting in goal at Villa Park on Saturday. He did, however, accompany his teammates to Villa Park.
Bernd Leno, who was spotted warming up on the touchline against Liverpool shortly after Ramsdale’s injury, is expected to take his position. It will be Leno’s eighth appearance for Arsenal this season. So far, three of his previous seven games which have been in the Premier League.
Ramsdale’s hip injury means he is unlikely to make Gareth Southgate’s England side. Along with Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Burnley’s Nick Pope, Ramsdale was named to Southgate’s 25-man roster, as THEWILL reported.
When asked if Ramsdale deserved to be England’s number one goalkeeper on Friday, Arsenal head coach, Mikel Arteta, had said: “He’s there now and he’s going to be fighting for a place.
“Knowing Aaron, he’s going to be pushing it very hard because it’s one of his biggest dreams.”
On March 26, England takes on Switzerland, followed by a friendly against Ivory Coast on March 29.
