November 05, (THEWILL) – Rangers advanced to the Viaplay Cup final after a convincing 3-1 victory over Hearts at Hampden Park on Sunday. Captain, James Tavernier, scored twice, including a penalty, as Rangers booked their place in the 17 December final against Aberdeen.
The breakthrough came five minutes into the second half when Tavernier converted a penalty after Hearts keeper Zander Clark fouled Danilo in the box. Just minutes later, substitute Scott Wright doubled Rangers’ lead with a composed finish from the edge of the area. Tavernier sealed the win with a brilliant free kick into the top corner from 20 yards out.
Hearts briefly threatened a comeback when Lawrence Shankland scored a penalty after VAR awarded a spot kick for a foul on Stephen Kingsley. However, Rangers saw out the win to give manager Philippe Clement his first chance of silverware.
The result continues Rangers’ impressive form under Clement, who is now unbeaten in five games since replacing Giovanni van Bronckhorst. After securing a place in the League Cup final, Rangers will now turn their attention back to climbing the Scottish Premiership table.
Hearts will be disappointed to exit the cup after pushing Rangers close in recent meetings. They must now focus on improving their league position after a difficult start to the 2023/2024 campaign.
