August 13, (THEWILL) – Rangers manager, Michael Beale, has backed Super Eagles’ striker, Cryiel Dessers, to find his goalscoring touch, despite a slow start to life at Ibrox.
The £4.5m summer signing from Cremonese has struggled so far, drawing criticism from sections of the Gers support. However, Beale insists the 28-year-old is still settling in and “getting up to speed” after missing pre-season. Dessers was jeered off when substituted during Saturday’s 4-0 win over Livingston, in which he failed to make an impact.
Beale admitted the Nigerian was still lacking sharpness after injury curtailed his season in Italy. But he took encouragement from Dessers’ goal against Servette in the UEFA Champions League in midweek. The Rangers boss was optimistic that Dessers will adapt to the demands of Scottish football. He stated: “You can see Cyriel has come off not having a pre-season. He missed the last two months of last season too. But his goal in Europe will do him good. We’re still tinkering up front. Cyriel will be fine here.”
Meanwhile, Beale confirmed central defenders Connor Goldson and John Lundstram will return for Tuesday’s UCL second leg with Servette. Lundstram missed Saturday’s game due to a family issue, while Goldson was rested. But, both are now ready to feature in Geneva as Rangers look to advance.
Beale said: “Everyone is fine for Tuesday, apart from John who won’t travel because of a family thing. I left [Ryan] Jack out on Saturday to keep him fresh. Connor was never going to play three games in a week, so credit to the medical staff.”
