May 2, (THEWILL)- Ralf Rangnick has turned down the opportunity to take over as Bayern Munich’s manager next season, opting instead to continue his role as the head coach of Austria’s national team beyond Euro 2024. The 65-year-old’s commitment to his current role has put an end to speculations linking him with the Bayern job.
Rangnick, who previously managed Manchester United and RB Leipzig, had been tipped as the frontrunner to succeed Thomas Tuchel at Bayern. However, he has now categorically stated his intention to remain with the Austrian national team, citing his determination to achieve their shared goals. “I am the national team coach of Austria with all my heart,” Rangnick said in an Austrian FA statement.
The German tactician’s decision comes as a blow to Bayern Munich, who had been actively seeking a new manager after missing out on the Bundesliga title this season. Bayer Leverkusen secured their first league crown last month, ending Bayern’s dominance of 11 consecutive league triumphs. Tuchel, whose tenure will end regardless of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League run, had overseen a tumultuous campaign.
Austria, led by Rangnick, finds themselves in a challenging Euro 2024 group alongside powerhouses France, Poland, and the Netherlands. Rangnick’s focus now shifts entirely towards guiding his team through this demanding test, as he aims to deliver a strong performance on the continental stage.
