December 29, (THEWILL) – Manchester United’s charitable foundation stands to experience substantial funding cuts in 2025 following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s continued implementation of cost-reduction measures across the organisation. The British billionaire, who acquired a minority stake in December 2023 for £1.2 billion, maintains control over sporting decisions despite owning less than 29% of shares through his INEOS corporation.
The foundation, which received approximately £1 million in funding during the previous year, will see a significant portion of its financial support discontinued. While club representatives maintain that Manchester United will continue its charitable commitments, the scale of involvement remains uncertain.
This development follows a pattern of extensive financial restructuring under Ratcliffe’s leadership. The organisation has already implemented various cost-cutting initiatives, including staff reductions and the cancellation of employee Christmas celebrations. These measures have occurred alongside substantial expenditures in other areas, such as the £21 million spent on managerial changes involving Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.
The announcement arrives amid growing criticism from supporters, particularly following reports that the club terminated payments to a charity supporting former players. Fan organisations have publicly condemned these decisions, with one group specifically criticising the INEOS project’s approach as “cowardice.”
These modifications to charitable funding represent part of a broader strategic overhaul at United. The club has implemented various revenue-generating measures, including increases in ticket prices, while simultaneously reducing operational costs across multiple departments. When addressing these controversial decisions earlier in December, Ratcliffe stated: “We have to make some difficult and unpopular decisions. If you shy away from the difficult decisions, then nothing much is going to change.”
