April 11, (THEWILL) – Reading have parted ways with their first-team manager, Paul Ince, after a disappointing run of results left the team struggling in the Championship relegation zone.
Ince was initially appointed as interim manager in February 2022 before being named permanent manager in May. However, following a string of poor performances, including five losses in eight games, the club has decided to terminate his contract with immediate effect.
Mark Bowen, Reading’s Head of Football Operations, praised Ince’s efforts, saying: “I would like to thank Paul and Alex for their efforts throughout what has admittedly been a frustrating and exceptionally challenging season so far. We would like to wish them well in their future endeavours.”
Assistant manager Alex Rae has also left the club. Under-21 manager and former Reading striker Noel Hunt has been named as interim manager until the end of the 2022-23 season. Even with this upheaval, Reading remains focused on avoiding relegation. The team sits 22nd in the Championship, just one point from safety.
Reading was also deducted six points after violating the English Football League’s financial rules earlier this month. The club’s immediate goal is to survive this season. Bowen stated, “For the next five games, our only focus is on doing everything we can to survive this season.” Reading’s next match is against Burnley on Saturday.
