October 06, (THEWILL) – At this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix, top Formula One challenger Red Bull has announced that it would run a special livery honouring Honda, which is retiring from the sport. Due of the Covid-19 outbreak, the Suzuka event was cancelled this weekend, and Turkey stepped in to fill the void.
Honda will leave Formula One at the end of the season, with this year’s power unit giving Red Bull a chance to fight Mercedes for the championship.
Christian Horner, Red Bull team principal, said: “We had all been looking forward to giving Honda’s Japanese fans a chance to celebrate our extremely successful relationship in Formula One, on home soil at Suzuka.
“With the race falling victim to the pandemic, we just couldn’t let the weekend pass without paying tribute to Honda and its amazing home fans by bringing a little bit of its heritage to Istanbul.
“The livery chosen for our cars pays homage to Honda’s remarkable F1 journey and hopefully we can give fans another victory in those legendary colours this weekend.”
The livery pays homage to the Honda RA272 that won the Mexican Grand Prix in 1965, giving the Japanese manufacturer its first F1 triumph. Richie Ginther was the team driver that won that 1965 GP.
