May 28, (THEWILL) – Max Verstappen showcased a dominant performance to win the Monaco Grand Prix, leading from start to finish despite the late-race downpour that added drama to the renowned street circuit.
The Red Bull driver secured pole position with an impressive lap on Saturday, enabling him to surge ahead of Fernando Alonso at the beginning of the race. Verstappen expertly controlled the event, finishing over 27 seconds ahead of the Spanish racing icon, who settled for second place for the first time this season.
Demonstrating his skill in adverse conditions, Verstappen made a strategic tire change on lap 55, which ultimately contributed to his fourth victory of the year and his 39th overall, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s record at Red Bull. With this latest triumph, Verstappen extended his lead in the Drivers’ Championship, currently holding a commanding 39-point advantage after just six rounds of the 22-race season.
Esteban Ocon of France secured third place, driving for Alpine and achieving his first podium finish, trailing Alonso by a further nine seconds. Meanwhile, Verstappen’s teammate and closest contender in the world championship race, Sergio Perez, faced a challenging race after crashing in qualifying, starting from the back of the grid, and settling for 16th position. Verstappen’s victory increased his points tally to 144, while Perez remained at 105.
Lewis Hamilton, starting the race in fifth, managed to gain one position and finished fourth in his Mercedes. He also secured the fastest lap of the race, earning an additional bonus point. As the season progresses, the next round will take place at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, where Verstappen appears poised to continue his relentless pursuit of a third consecutive world championship.
