March 30, (THEWILL) – Herve Renard, the former manager of Saudi Arabia, has been named as the new head coach of the France women’s team ahead of the Women’s World Cup.
The Frenchman has signed a contract until August 2024 and will be tasked with leading his country to the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. Renard’s appointment comes after the dismissal of Corinne Diacre, just four months before the tournament begins.
Renard, who led Saudi Arabia to a famous victory over Argentina at the men’s World Cup in November, will bring his extensive international management experience to the French side. He has previously led teams including Morocco, the Ivory Coast, Zambia, and Angola.
The 54-year-old will be officially presented on Friday and will announce his squad for upcoming games against Colombia and Canada in April. The appointment of Renard is hoped to bring some stability to the French women’s team after a turbulent period.
Several top players, including Wendie Renard, the team captain, refused to play for France at the Women’s World Cup due to tensions with former coach Diacre. France has never won the World Cup and is set to face Brazil, Jamaica, and Panama in Group F.
