March 28, (THEWILL) – Herve Renard has stepped down as coach of the Saudi Arabia national team and is expected to take over as head coach of the French women’s team.

Renard, who guided the Green Falcons to a memorable victory over Argentina in the World Cup group stage last November, has been touted as the favourite to succeed Corinne Diacre before the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand later this year.

Renard has reportedly submitted his resignation and the Saudi Football Association has accepted it. The upcoming match against Bolivia is expected to be his last as the coach of the Saudi team. Despite attempts to persuade him to stay, Renard is determined to return to his homeland and lead a national team there.

Diacre, who was sacked as France’s coach earlier this month, just months before the Women’s World Cup tournament, will be succeeded by Renard if the negotiations are successful. With four friendly matches ahead of the tournament, France is gearing up for their opening match against Jamaica, in Sydney, on July 23.
