Reps Approve 35 Percent Affirmative Action For Women, Vote To Override Presidential Assent

SAN FRANCISCO, July 27, (THEWILL) – Members of the House of Representatives have approved 35 percent affirmative action for women in politics, as 240 of the lawmakers present on Thursday’s plenary voted in support of it.

The House also voted to reinforced the powers of the National Assembly to override the President of the Federal Republic in the passage of Budget and other Bills passed into law, should he delay his assent for 30 days.

Reps members also shut down the quest for devolution of powers from the Exclusive List to the Concurrent List as well as the call for the creation of new states and alteration of existing boundaries.

To strengthen the performance of various government ministries, the federal lawmakers also voted to compel the President to nominate his ministers and form cabinet within 30 days of his inauguration.

A component of the Bill seeking attachment of portfolios to the ministerial nominees also passed.

These developments were the offshoots of the ongoing voting on various amended items in the 1999 constitution.

THEWILL recalls that the Senate on Wednesday refused to approve 35 percent affirmative action for ministers but it did for commissioners when it voted on the constitutional amendments.
