March 20, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s Rivers United secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday, with a 2-2 draw at home against Diables Noirs.
The team’s point tally now sits at 10, placing them on top of the group with a comfortable lead of three points ahead of ASEC Mimosas. The Ivorian team is yet to play their penultimate match and could get level on points with Rivers, even if it will not affect the Nigerian side’s qualification.
While Diables only managed to snag the third spot with a total of five points, their chances for further advancement still depend on Asec’s performance against DC Motema Pembe in that outstanding match.
Rivers United’s road to victory was not an easy one, with the team having to make up for a 1-0 deficit in the first half. They managed to take the lead at 2-1, but a goal by Diables equalised the score with only nine minutes left to play.
However, the Nigerian Premier Football League champions held on for the crucial point that qualified them for the quarter-finals.
