June 03, (THEWILL) – In an impressive display of tennis prowess, top seed, Iga Swiatek, delivered an astounding performance on Saturday, effortlessly defeating Xinyu Wang with a double-bagel to secure her place in the fourth round of the French Open.
The 22-year-old Polish player, a two-time champion at Roland-Garros and the holder of the 2022 trophy, is also the reigning US Open champion. As the world number one and a strong contender for this year’s tournament, Swiatek’s prospects were further bolstered by the withdrawal of Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, due to illness earlier in the day.
Prior to the Grand Slam, Swiatek had claimed victory at the Qatar Open and the Stuttgart Grand Prix in 2023, but suffered a defeat to Aryna Sabalenka, at the Madrid Open in May. However, for her 21-year-old Chinese opponent, reaching this stage marked a significant milestone in her Grand Slam career, as she currently holds the 80th spot in the world rankings.
While Wang had triumphed over Rebecca Peterson, in straight sets on Thursday, she was no match for Swiatek’s dominance, who effortlessly broke her opponent’s serve to secure a 6-0, 6-0 win in just 51 minutes.
