July 14, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have decided against trying to sign unsettled Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.
Following Romelu Lukaku’s return to Inter on loan, the London club has been actively searching for reinforcements for its goal-starved frontline, and Raheem Sterling’s arrival was announced on Wednesday as one of the fruits of that search. Stories of a possible move for Ronaldo began before Sterling and it was thought that he could complement a Ronaldo inclusion.
However, it is becoming unlikely that the Portuguese Sportster will be present at Stamford Bridge to support the England international. Even if Todd Boehly, the new owner, had been drawn in by the prospect of making such a big signing, Chelsea’s interest in the striker has since waned.
Although Thomas Tuchel currently has a number of attacking players at his disposal, securing a right forward is his current priority. The Blues manager has reportedly shown reluctance to work with superstars who are getting older, such as Ronaldo and Neymar, who has also been connected with a move to Stamford Bridge.
Ronaldo had requested that Manchester United consider any reasonable offers that came in for him this summer, a decision motivated by his desire to play in the UEFA Champions League and compete for yet more hardware and personal accolades. With Chelsea not actively chasing the 37-year-old, the small pool of clubs willing to pay for his services are closing and he could well be at Old Trafford next season.
