November 13, (THEWILL) – In Sunday’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix, George Russell defeated Lewis Hamilton, his Mercedes teammate, to win the race.
Russell duplicated his Sprint victory the day before by winning the main event and guiding a Mercedes 1-2 to the finish line. It was the German team’s first victory of the year after they had struggled to bounce back from their early-season issues following changes to the car designs.
Carlos Sainz fell five positions from qualifying due to a new combustion engine, and Hamilton challenged him late on as he began second on the grid. The British driver had to push his way through the pack as Russell made a quick tyre change at the halfway point of the race, far ahead of his rival Sainz.
With a few laps remaining, Hamilton requested permission to challenge his teammate for the victory but was advised to “be respectful,” as the younger driver maintained control until the very finish.
Max Verstappen, the world champion, came in sixth. Although there is little reason to believe Mercedes will contend for the title again next year, they are finally giving Red Bull a proper challenge, however belated it is, this year.
