October 05, (THEWILL) — George Russell claimed victory at the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, finishing ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. The Mercedes driver started from pole position and maintained his lead throughout the 62-lap night race at Marina Bay Circuit.
McLaren claimed the Formula 1 constructors’ championship with six races remaining, matching the record Red Bull set in 2023. Oscar Piastri finished fourth whilst Norris took third, with their combined 27 points clinching the team’s 10th title and second in succession. The result reduced Norris’s lead over Piastri in the drivers’ standings to 22 points.
There was a movement of controversy at the opening corner when Norris, starting fifth, overtook Kimi Antonelli before diving inside Piastri at turn one. The move saw contact with Verstappen’s rear and a wheel-to-wheel clash with his teammate. Piastri protested on team radio, saying the manoeuvre was unfair, but McLaren declined to order a position swap.
Verstappen reported gearbox problems during the race, describing downshift issues that felt like a handbrake. By lap 41, Norris had closed on the struggling Red Bull driver but could not overtake on the notoriously difficult Marina Bay street circuit.
The event was declared Formula 1’s first official Heat Hazard, requiring liquid-cooled vests to be available for all drivers. However, with air temperature around 28 degrees Celsius rather than the anticipated 31 degrees, some drivers, including Verstappen, opted not to use the equipment.
