April 06, (THEWILL) – Russia has withdrawn its appeal against a FIFA ban on its national teams competing in international events, as Qatar World Cup qualifying continued without its senior men’s team.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian teams were barred from participating in FIFA and UEFA events, as THEWILL reported. Due to FIFA’s suspension, Russia were unable to partake in their World Cup play-off semi-final against Poland.
The Russian Football Union (RFU) requested a postponement of the ban, citing a match scheduled for late March, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) declined.
As a result, Poland advanced to the final, where they faced Sweden national team that defeated the Czech Republic. Poland won and therefore qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
According to CAS, the RFU withdrew their appeal last week after the tie was settled and Poland was assigned to a World Cup group containing Argentina, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia,
However, Russia’s legal appeals to numerous sanctions, including those imposed by UEFA, are sure to continue.
