January 06, (THEWILL) – Lionel Messi, the renowned Argentine footballer and World Cup champion, was unable to attend the Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony hosted by President Joe Biden on Saturday, due to prior commitments. Despite being one of the honourees for the prestigious award, Messi’s absence was confirmed by both his management team and his Major League Soccer club, Inter Miami.
In a letter addressed to the White House, Messi expressed his gratitude for being selected as a recipient of the United States’ highest civilian honour. He described the recognition as a profound privilege but explained that scheduling conflicts made it impossible for him to be present at the event. Messi also conveyed his hope to meet President Biden in the near future.
The ceremony honoured 18 other distinguished individuals, including former Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, basketball legend, Magic Johnson, actors Michael J. Fox and Denzel Washington, fashion designer, Ralph Lauren, and science advocate, Bill Nye. These individuals were celebrated for their significant contributions to society.
Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, boasts an extraordinary career. He has won 46 major titles across club and international football, including the FIFA World Cup, two Copa America titles, and four UEFA Champions League trophies.
