March 31, (THEWILL) — Officers of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, led by the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Baba Azare, on Tuesday, staged a high-profile walkathon through major parts of Uyo as part of activities marking the 2026 National Police Week.
The exercise, which drew participation from multiple security agencies and civil stakeholders, underscored a renewed push for community-oriented policing and inter-agency collaboration in maintaining public safety.
The walkathon kicked off at the State Command Headquarters and ended at Ibom Plaza, with personnel of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Immigration Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) joining the procession.
Also in attendance were representatives of corporate organisations, media bodies, civil society groups, and community-based associations, reflecting a broad-based support for the initiative.
Addressing participants, CP Azare said the exercise was aimed at reinforcing police visibility and reassuring residents of the Command’s readiness to safeguard lives and property.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the theme of this year’s Police Week, “Community Partnership: Building Trust”, stressing that effective policing depends on cooperation between law enforcement and the public.
The Police Commissioner further called on residents to actively support security efforts by volunteering information and reporting concerns, assuring that the Command remains responsive and committed to professionalism.
He commended the participation of sister agencies and stakeholders, describing it as a strong signal of unity in the collective fight against crime.
The walkathon also served as a demonstration of operational readiness and physical fitness among officers, while projecting a more approachable image of the Police within the community.
The event forms part of a series of activities lined up to strengthen public confidence and deepen engagement between the Police and the people of Akwa Ibom State.
