April 08, (THEWILL) – Serena Williams hinted at her return to Wimbledon in an Instagram story video with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Looking elegantly formal, the tennis superstar said excitedly: “We’ve been talking about my comeback, and he’s been hyping me up and getting me ready for Wimbledon. Can’t wait!”
Rodgers then inquired about Serena’s absence from the US Open to which she replied: “Wimbledon’s before the U.S. Open, I’ve got to play Wimbledon first,” before adding: “Exciting!”
Rodgers said, “She’s back.” towards the end of the video, pointing at Williams.
THEWILL recalls that Serena last competed in the Wimbledon competition in 2021, when she slipped and injured her leg in a first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
She took to her official Instagram account after to post: “I was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg. My love and gratitude are with the fans and the team who make being on centre court so meaningful.
“Feeling the extraordinary warmth and support of the crowd today when I walked on—and off—the court meant the world to me.”
Throughout her career, the 40-year-old has dominated women’s tennis, with 23 grand slam victories, second only to Margaret Court (24). With Steffi Graf and Dorothea Lambert Chambers, she has the third most Wimbledon titles in the tournament’s history.
She has not won a major slam since the Australian Open in 2017 and has only won one singles trophy in the last five years.
Williams’ blistering pace has slowed in the latter stages of her career, as injury and other reasons have hampered her progress. She has not lost her competitive spirit or desire to catch and pass Court, though.
In a March interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, she said of her drive: “I should have been at like 30 or 32 (grand slam singles titles). I should have had it (the record), really, I’ve had many opportunities to have it. But I’m not giving up.”
