April 26, (THEWILL) – Sheffield United are heading back to the English Premier League after the Blades clinched automatic promotion with a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at Bramall Lane.
Two second-half goals from Sander Berge and Anel Ahmedhodzic sealed the victory they needed with three games remaining. The promotion marks a triumphant return for the Blades, who were relegated two years and nine days ago. Burnley’s victory the night before meant United only needed a win to secure their place in the top flight.
Sheffield United boss, Paul Heckingbottom, made three changes to the team that lost to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final, with Tommy Doyle, James McAtee and Oli McBurnie coming in. The victory was hard-fought, with the first half ending goalless. West Brom had a few opportunities but failed to convert.
The second half belonged to the Blades, who dominated play and had several penalty shouts turned down. They finally broke through in the 58th minute when Berge found the back of the net. Ahmedhodzic sealed the deal with a brilliant volley in the 76th minute.
West Brom failed to mount any serious challenge in the closing minutes, and the home crowd was able to celebrate their team’s return to the top flight of English football once more.
