April 26, (THEWILL) Manchester City moved one step closer to the English Premier League title with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.
Kevin De Bruyne was the star of the show, scoring two goals and assisting another as City dismantled the league leaders with a dominant display. John Stones and Erling Haaland were also on the scoresheet for the home side, while Rob Holding, who was outmatched by Haaland all game, scored a consolation goal for Arsenal.
City were denied an early penalty but De Bruyne made no mistake with his finish in the 12th minute. Stones then headed in from De Bruyne’s free-kick to double the lead before the break. The Belgian added a third goal in the second half before Haaland’s strike saw him break the record for goals in a 38-game Premier League season.
The result sees City move within two points of Arsenal with a game in hand, putting the title race firmly in their control for another football season. The Gunners will look to bounce back when they host Chelsea next Tuesday, by which time, City could have retaken the league submit after their game against Fulham on Sunday.
