Most Reverend Simeon Borokini, the Anglican Bishop of Akure Diocese and Archbishop of Ondo Ecclesiastical Province, has washed his hands off his son, Simeon Toluwani Borokini’s political ambition.
Toluwani is a public speaker, politician and humanitarian. He is a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly representing Akure, South Constituency 1 under the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC. He started his political journey in 2019 and became the whip of the assembly.
He is seeking re-election to the house in the forth-coming general election, but his father clearly disapproves of his aspiration. Rev Borokini has publicly declared that he will not support his son’s ambition to contest for an elective position this year. According to him, he will not involve himself in partisan politics because of his calling. He added that he had warned his son about this even before he went for first term in office.
Being one of the highest-ranking clerics in the Anglican Church, he holds a sensitive position which can cause anarchy or even division in the church. The Bishop revealed that his congregants belong to different political parties and it wouldn’t speak well of him as a clergy to support his son alone while neglecting his church members.
Bishop Borokini had conferred the title of Baba Ijo of the Anglican Church, Ondo State on the Deputy Governor of the state, Eyitayo Jegede, who belongs to the opposition PDP.
Borokini argued that if he had opted to support his son, he would have been biased about the title given to the Jegede, adding that he might have lost his position as a Bishop of the Anglican Communion.
