March 11, (THEWILL) – 13-year-old Simisola Gbadamosi has made history by becoming the youngest Nigerian to receive an Emmy nomination.
Her exceptional performance as the voice of Tola Martins in Disney+’s animated series, Iwaju, has earned her a nomination for “Younger Voice Performer in a Preschool, Children’s, or Young Teen Programme” at the 3rd Annual Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.
Simisola’s nomination marks a major turning point for the Nigerian entertainment industry, which is progressively earning international recognition for Nigerian talent and storytelling. This accomplishment shows how the industry is expanding and its growing ability to produce content that appeals to global audiences.
Iwaju is a collaboration between Disney Animation and Kugali Media. The series is set in a futuristic Lagos that has embraced technological advancement while maintaining a strong sense of Nigerian identity. It blends the Nigerian culture with imaginative stories that address societal issues like inequality.
Iwaju has also earned two more nominations: Outstanding Children’s or Young Teen Animated Series and Outstanding Directing for an Animated Series.
