April 16, (THEWILL) – Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has been released from the Ilorin Correctional Centre following the withdrawal of defamation charges filed against him by veteran Fuji musician, Saheed Osupa.
Portable, who had been detained after failing to meet bail conditions imposed by an Upper Area Court, was freed on Tuesday after Osupa formally opted for an out-of-court settlement.
Confirming the development, Osupa’s legal team told THEWILL that the decision to drop the case was taken after several prominent stakeholders in the Nigerian music industry intervened, appealing for an amicable resolution.
In a letter submitted to the court, Osupa’s lawyers stated, “It is our client’s instruction that notable figures in the music industry and other respected personalities in society have intervened and urged him to withdraw the case in the interest of public peace.
“We, therefore, apply on behalf of our client to discontinue the case and terminate proceedings, as the matter has now been resolved amicably.
“We also urge the court to caution the defendant against making any further defamatory statements or actions that could harm our client’s person or business.”
Shortly after his release, Portable took to Instagram to express remorse and publicly apologise to Saheed Osupa. Sharing a photo of the Fuji maestro, the singer wrote: “God bless you sir, I’m sorry Bami.”
He also posted a video revealing a freshly shaved head, a symbolic gesture often associated with a fresh start.
Portable was initially arrested after Osupa petitioned the police, accusing the singer of criminal defamation, threats to life, and conduct capable of inciting public unrest.
