November 23, (THEWILL) – American singer and actress, Teyana Taylor, has filed for divorce from former professional basketball player and actor, Iman Shumpert, after seven years of marriage.
Legal documents filed in Georgia detail the extensive breakdown of their marriage, with revelations including a 2022 divorce filing by Taylor, which she withdrew the following day.
Currently, she is pursuing primary physical custody of their two children, along with joint legal custody and child support.
Teyana alleges in the documents that Shumpert displayed cruel and extreme narcissistic behaviour throughout their marriage. This reportedly involved emotional and mental abuse, cruel treatment, selfishness, and an incident where the one-time NBA champion crashed her Rolls-Royce and fled the scene, evading a DUI arrest.
She further claims that Iman was jealous of her spotlight, urging her not to work and later complaining about her not contributing financially to their family.
Teyana explains that she intentionally dimmed her light for her husband to maintain a harmonious marriage.
This is despite earlier comments downplaying infidelity as a reason for their separation. She emphasised: “To be 1000% clear, infidelity ain’t one of the reasons for our departure.”
Teyana shared on Instagram in September about the separation, addressing cheating rumours. She stated, “We are still the best of friends, great business partners, and one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our two beautiful children. Most importantly, we are FAMILY, and in the 10 years together, 7 years married, we ain’t ever played with or about THAT.”
In 2015, Iman assisted in delivering their baby girl. Taylor revealed a possible secret marriage with Shumpert on The Wendy Williams Show on September 20, 2016, but they officially got married on October 1 2016. She also confirmed her second pregnancy in the music video for ‘Wake Up Love’ on June 12, 2020.
However, on September 17, 2023, the couple announced their separation. The next day, Teyana shared on Instagram that she and Iman had been separated for months.
