July 08, (THEWILL) – In the second Group C game against Burundi in the TotalEnergies 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations on Thursday at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Morocco, Banyana Banyana ensured qualification for the quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory.

However, on Thursday, they had to cope with complacency as Burundi put up a true fight. However, the ascendancy was always in Banyanya’s favour. The South African ladies had 28 shots, 16 of which were on goal, even if they only managed to score three goals overall.
Banyana opened the scoring at the 20th-minute mark through Thembi Kgatlana. The lead only lasted for 10 minutes as Aniella Uwimana of Burundi equalised from close range. However, Amogelang Masego Motau restored Banyanya’s lead with a spectacular goal two minutes later. Then, Linda Motlhalo scored from the penalty spot to finish off the victory.
South Africa leads Group C with a maximum six points from two matches and will wrap up the group stages against Botswana in their final Group C match on Sunday.
