February 11, (THEWILL) – Southampton were on the receiving end of a stunning comeback by Wolverhampton Wanderers at St Mary’s Stadium, on Saturday.
The match saw a one-goal lead by Southampton slip away in the second half, despite the Saints playing with a one-man advantage from as early as the 27th minute of the game. In the first half, Charly Alcaraz gave Southampton the lead with a well-placed shot that went in off the inside of the post.
However, the momentum shifted when midfielder Mario Lemina, was sent off for receiving his second yellow card. Despite the setback, Wolves fought back and equalised, thanks to a mistake by Jan Bednarek, which was prompted by the introduction of Adama Traore.
The comeback was completed by fellow substitute, Joao Gomes, who capitalised on some poor defending by Lyanco and fired a powerful shot beyond the reach of Gavin Bazunu. The result piles more pressure on Southampton Manager, Nathan Jones, who has lost seven of his eight league games in charge.
Next up, Southampton will face a tough test against Chelsea, while Wolves will look to continue their winning streak at home against Bournemouth.
