May 24, (THEWILL) – Southampton have revealed that head coach, Ruben Selles, will be parting ways with the team as his contract concludes at the end of the current season.
Selles, who took charge in February as a replacement for Nathan Jones, enjoyed a victorious start with a 1-0 away win against Chelsea. Despite putting up a valiant fight against formidable English Premier League adversaries, including a thrilling 3-3 draw against then-league leaders, Arsenal, Southampton’s relegation to the Championship marks the conclusion of their decade-long tenure in the top flight.
Selles will oversee Southampton’s final match of the season against Liverpool at home this Sunday, bidding farewell to the club thereafter. In an official statement, the club said: “Southampton Football Club can confirm that it has held conversations with Men’s First Team Manager, Ruben Selles, and decided that his contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of the season.
“The club wants to place on record its thanks to Ruben for taking on the managerial position at a difficult time for the club and for giving his all as we attempted to stay in the Premier League.”
There are indications that Swansea City’s Russell Martin is currently the frontrunner to assume the managerial position at Southampton. Sources monitored by THEWILL have confirmed that Martin is highly likely to make the transition to St Mary’s ahead of the upcoming 2023/2024 season.
