Aug 04, (THEWILL) — “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has continued its record-breaking run, delivering the biggest opening weekend ever recorded in West African cinema.
The Marvel and Sony Pictures blockbuster achieved the milestone after its successful debut, breaking several records including, the biggest superhero opening and Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing opening weekend in the region.
According to distributor FilmOne Entertainment, the film earned more than ₦705.7 million from preview screenings and its opening weekend, making it the fastest movie to cross the ₦700 million mark in the region.
The movie also recorded a strong opening day, generating ₦120.4 million from advance screenings and early shows, making it one of the biggest theatrical launches ever recorded in the market.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has quickly become one of the year’s biggest cinema releases.
The film has already entered the list of Nigeria’s highest-grossing Hollywood releases, ranking sixth after its opening weekend and expected to climb higher as its cinema run continues.
A finish above ₦1 billion now appears likely, with the film expected to become one of the biggest theatrical releases ever seen in Nigeria if it maintains its strong performance.
The success of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” highlights the continued growth of cinema audiences in Nigeria, with major international and local productions attracting large numbers of moviegoers.
