August 3, (THEWILL) — Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has delivered a major box office debut, earning $927 million worldwide during its opening weekend.
The superhero film, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Zendaya as MJ, recorded the second-biggest global opening weekend ever, behind only Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame”, which earned more than $1.2 billion in its first weekend in 2019.
The film also performed strongly in North America, where it earned about $355 million from 4,487 cinemas, placing it among the biggest domestic openings in box office history.
Outside the US, “Brand New Day” earned more than $570 million across international markets, including strong performances in China and the United Kingdom. The film’s global total puts it on track to cross the $1 billion mark.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie continues Peter Parker’s story after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.
The latest instalment follows Parker as he fights crime in a world where everyone has forgotten his identity as Spider-Man.
The film has received positive reactions from audiences and critics, with many praising Holland’s performance and the movie’s more personal approach to the character.
The impressive opening comes as a major boost for Marvel Studios, which has faced challenges in recent years following weaker performances from some superhero releases.
The film arrives ahead of the highly anticipated “Avengers: Doomsday”, which is expected to bring together several major Marvel characters and continue the studio’s next phase of storytelling.
In Nigeria, the film achieved its own milestone before its official release, recording the biggest preview opening in the country’s box office history with ₦120.4 million from Wednesday and Thursday early-access screenings.
Filmhouse Cinemas also reported record demand ahead of the release, with more than 3,500 tickets sold during the advance sale period, marking the highest pre-release ticket sales recorded in Nigerian cinema history.
The strong response reflects the continued popularity of major Hollywood releases in the Nigerian market, where superhero films remain a major attraction for cinema audiences.
The film’s performance further highlights Spider-Man’s global appeal.
Previous instalments, including “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, which earned nearly $2 billion worldwide, have helped establish the character as one of the most successful franchises in modern cinema.
With its impressive debut, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has strengthened Marvel’s position at the box office and set the stage for another major year for superhero films.
