May 01, (THEWILL) — Spotify is introducing a new “Verified by Spotify” badge to help users distinguish human artists from AI-generated content.

A light green checkmark icon will appear next to artists who meet specific criteria, such as consistent listener engagement, linked social media accounts, and concert dates, alongside the ‘Verified by Spotify’ badge.

This move comes as Spotify tackles concerns about the rise of AI-generated music, aiming to highlight artists with real contributions to music culture and filter out fake profiles.

According to Spotify, more than 99% of the artists people search for will be verified.

However, some critics argue that the badge only confirms the artist is human, not that their music is entirely free from AI.

Ed Newton-Rex, a campaigner for creators’ rights, suggests Spotify should also label AI-generated music.

Spotify’s update follows past controversies, such as the case of the band “The Velvet Sundown,” which was accused of using AI.

The new badge is part of the platform’s effort to increase transparency and showcase authentic artist activity.

Expanded artist profiles will also be introduced, offering more details about artists’ careers and recent activities.

Spotify’s verification process will be ongoing, with badges rolling out in the coming weeks.
