March 17, (THEWILL) – Tottenham enhanced their fragile Champions League prospects with a 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion, thanks to goals from Cristian Romero and Harry Kane.
Kane robbed Robert Sanchez of the ball for a chance that could have allowed Spurs take the lead early on, but he took the ball too wide and skewered his effort wide of the empty net.
Tottenham started well as that chance clearly showed, but as the first half went, the hosts grew into the game. It took a somewhat funny circumstance for the visitors to seize the lead.
Dejan Kulusevski struck Romero with a shot from the edge of the box, leaving Sanchez isolated and caught off guard as the ball slid into the other corner.
When Kulusevski got a lucky bounce from Shane Duffy, Spurs should have extended their lead to two goals, but Sanchez saved his effort even though he was clear through.
Brighton came out purposeful after the break, but clear-cut chances were few and far between, and Tottenham extended their lead on the attack. Rodrigo Bentancur slipped in Kane to score coolly beyond Sanchez after having chances through Son Heung-min and Kulusevski.
Kane therefore became the all-time leading scorer in Premier League away matches with the goal.
The result meant Spurs have moved back up to seventh in the Premier League table in their pursuit of a top-four finish, while Brighton have suffered their sixth straight league defeat.
Brighton’s next game, a home match against Norwich, will have to wait until after the international break, while Tottenham will face West Ham on Sunday.
