April 23, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur dropped crucial points in the race for a Champions League spot after a 0-0 draw against Brentford.
It was a result that meant Spurs had gone from being three points ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League table to fall two points behind and Conte will dislike the fact that they failed to register a shot on target for the second week in a row.
Early on, Bryan Mbeumo had a shot deflected wide by Cristian Romero, before an Ivan Toney header from a Christian Eriksen corner hit the bar.
After a tense 45 minutes, the Bees had the best of the first half, appearing particularly dangerous from set pieces, but the two teams headed into the interval in a stalemate.
The hosts remained in control in the second half and Mbeumo turned over Rico Henry’s low cross to remind Spurs of the danger lurking around their goal. Conte’s charges sought to seize control but shots by Harry Kane, Dejan Kulusevski, and Rodrigo Bentancur were repelled amid a bustle in the Brentford box.
Eriksen came close to punishing Eric Dier for a wayward ball out of defence, but Romero came to the rescue once more with a recovery challenge, before Kane cleared Pontus Jansson’s header off the line and Hugo Lloris denied Eriksen on the rebound.
In stoppage time, Toney hit the woodwork again from an Eriksen set piece, and Mbeumo’s rebound could only find the side-netting, before Kane nearly stole the game with an incredible overhead kick.
Brentford’s amazing run of winning every game with Eriksen in the starting lineup came to an end, but the Bees remain 11th in the table and in with a chance of finishing in the top half.
