March 25, (THEWILL) – The Super Falcons of Nigeria have retained their top spot as the best women’s football team in Africa, according to the latest FIFA rankings.
The team’s recent performance at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, saw them finish fourth behind South Africa, Morocco, and Zambia, relinquishing the crown they won in 2018. This pushed them to their lowest rating of 46 on the FIFA ranking, but they have since moved up to 42nd in the global ranking.
Despite only securing one victory over Costa Rica since the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria remains ahead of South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, and Cote d’Ivoire, completing the top five in Africa. Interestingly, the Super Falcons are 12 rungs above the African champions, South Africa, who are placed 54th in the global ranking.
The United States Women’s National Team remains the top team in the world, followed by Germany, Sweden, England, and France, completing the top five.
Nigeria’s group stage opponents at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Canada and co-hosts Australia, are also in the top ten, sitting in sixth and 10th place, respectively. The Super Falcons’ best-ever placing on the FIFA ranking was 23rd in July 2003.
