Sunderland vs Newcastle

March 22, (THEWILL) — Brian Brobbey struck in the 90th minute to give Sunderland a 2-1 win at St. James’ Park, completing an English Premier League double over Newcastle United in the 2025/2026 season.

Newcastle threatened early, with Anthony Elanga heading over inside the opening three minutes. The hosts soon took the lead, however, after Luke O’Nien’s short pass inside his own box was cut out by Nick Woltemade, who played in Anthony Gordon to round his marker and fire low into the bottom-left corner.

Sunderland were not without their own moments before the interval. Chemsdine Talbi drew a sharp save from Aaron Ramsdale, and Sven Botman struck the post with a header shortly before half-time.

The visitors levelled 12 minutes into the second half. Habib Diarra’s close-range effort was cleared off the line, but Talbi converted the rebound. Newcastle then saw Malick Thiaw’s header ruled out with 15 minutes left, Jacob Murphy having interfered with Melker Ellborg from an offside position.

Brobbey settled the contest late on, prodding home at the second attempt to seal the comeback and hand Sunderland a famous away win.
