October 01, (THEWILL) — Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has etched her name in history as the first female African artist to sell over 10 million copies of a single in the United States.
The milestone was achieved through her global smash collaboration “Wait for U” with American rapper Future and Canadian superstar Drake, which has now surpassed 10 million sales, according to Chart Data.
With this record, the track is set to earn the prestigious RIAA Diamond certification—one of the rarest honours in the U.S. music industry.
Tems is only the second African artist to hit this mark, following Wizkid, whose “One Dance” with Drake also reached Diamond status.
Beyond the record-breaking collaboration, Tems has carved out a powerful solo career, with hits like “Essence,” “Free Mind,” “Higher,” “Me & U,” and “Found,” many of which have already earned Platinum and Gold certifications in the U.S.
Her latest feat further underscores her global influence and the rising dominance of African music and Afrobeats on the international stage.
