May 08, (THEWILL) — The Nollywood Reporter, a Nigerian entertainment publication, has raised concerns over a possible withdrawal of its accreditation to cover the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, following the publication of a critical editorial examining unresolved issues surrounding the awards.
The editorial, titled “Eleven Years of Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards: Unsolved Issues in Nollywood”, explored recurring concerns within the Nigerian film industry, including transparency, category definitions, industry representation, and the evolution of the awards platform over the years.
In a statement issued on May 7, the publication said it had initially received indications that it would be part of the official media coverage for the ceremony, but recent developments suggest it may no longer be accredited.
AMVCA organisers have provided no official reason, but the timing has raised concerns that the editorial may have influenced the decision.
The publication maintained that the article was published in good faith as part of its commitment to constructive industry journalism and critical engagement within the Nigerian film and television ecosystem. It added:
“As a publication dedicated to documenting and developing Nollywood, we believe thoughtful critique and industry accountability are essential to growth. Media independence and open dialogue should remain central to the continued progress of Africa’s creative industries.”
The Nollywood Reporter also acknowledged the AMVCA’s role in promoting African storytelling and said it remains open to clarification or engagement from the organisers.
